Destination Details
Cambodia’s second city often feels more like a small town than an urban centre but this is certainly one of the attractions. Take time strolling around the riverside area and the quaint colonial shophouse lined streets. This friendly town boasts a wonderful art deco market with a wealth of sellers which is worth a visit.
For those with an interest in history the old railway station is quite fascinating to explore. Out of town there are more sinister remnants of interest including Phnom Sampov killing cave, Wat Ek Phnom. Impressive views can be obtained after ascending the steep steps at Phnom Banan. Enjoy a leisurely bicycle ride through the small village of Wat Kor.
For those who like a bit of adventure the Bamboo train remains a popular activity as you rush along at breakneck speeds on what the locals refer to as a Nori.
Welcome to Battambang
Before sunset a popular activity is to watch a huge colony of bats leave their roost in the cave high in the cliff and head out in search of their nightly meal, waves of bats pass right overhead and are quite a spectacle. Battambang has a burgeoning arts scene with several small galleries popping up around town, in addition the Phare circus is a delight of the performing arts. Foodies will also not be dissapointed, there are great eateries around town with tasty bites available on almost every street, there is even a local winery where tasting is an option. With so much to do and explore this often overlooked city should be a must on any visit to the kingdom.
